Branch meeting - How we can win Oxfordshire Weighting
Venue: McInness Room, Warneford Hospital, Roosevelt Drive, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7JX
What do we want?
The equivalent of London weighting paid to all NHS staff in Oxfordshire to help them afford to live here.
Why do we need it?
Oxford is the most expensive city in the the UK to live in. A band 2 porter renting a single bedroom flat in Oxford can expect to pay 85% of their wages on rent. For higher band staff the situation is little better. As a result the NHS in Oxfordshire has twice the national vacancy rate, patient care is undermined and staff are overworked to pay for housing and cover the high number of vacancies.
How much is it worth?
NHS staff in London paying the same housing costs as NHS staff in Oxford receive an additional 15% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £3,483 and a maximum of £4,339 per year to help them meet the high housing costs.
Can we win it?
Local MPs support local NHS staff being paid more to address the recruitment crisis. Local NHS employers would also like to see additional funds to help them recruit the workforce needed to provide care to the local population. But it will take the power and organisation of UNISON to convince the government to
release the funds needed to meet the claim.
